Wellness and the Calming Effects of THC

Posted by Sweet Justice on 3rd May 2024

Why are the canna-curious making the switch to THC-infused beverages in record numbers?

There are a variety of reasons why people are making the switch from alcohol to cannabis-infused drinks, including cultural shifts, therapeutic reasons, and just people searching for a more relaxed way to unwind and de-stress.

Over the last few years, there has been a cultural attitude shift in regard to both alcohol and cannabis use. While cannabis use through legal products such as cannabis-infused beverages in the United States, is on the rise, alcohol use for the first time in many years has remained relatively stagnant.

Alcohol – Shifting Social Values

While alcohol use has been globally accepted for decades and enjoys mainstream acceptance, it’s also a significant contributing factor in many negative social interactions. On the other hand, cannabis use, while being widely stigmatized for the last century, is enjoying an increase in social acceptance and is building a reputation as a better alternative to alcohol for many people looking to relax and de-stress their lives.

There are a variety of factors that are influencing this cultural shift toward cannabis-infused products, including the impact of alcohol on health, the societal roles of cannabis and alcohol, and the wellness and calming effects of THC.

The Potential Benefits of Cannabis-Infused Drinks

For thousands of years, civilizations around the world have been using cannabis for medicinal, therapeutic, religious, and social reasons.

In the Xinjiang-Uighur autonomous region of China, a European-appearing male was discovered with over 800 grams of cultivated cannabis. While it may sound like the start of a recent news broadcast, it’s in fact, a story almost 3,000 years old.

The body of the male, dated back to 750 BCE, was discovered with almost 800 grams of cultivated cannabis, not wild cannabis. Further analysis of the cannabis showed that the male parts of the cannabis had been removed, and the cannabis had high THC content, having been selectively bred from strains based on their THC potency.

This story tells us that cannabis was being used for its psychoactive properties, not just as cloth or food, many, many years ago. It’s taken a long time, but social acceptance of cannabis is slowly turning full circle.

As the popularity of cannabis use increases, so too does the amount of scientific research and studies into any potential therapeutic benefits it may offer.

Cannabis and the Endocannabinoid System

The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) is a regulatory system comprising thousands of receptors located throughout the body. When something isn’t functioning correctly in your body, your ECS attempts to restore balance and harmony.

The ECS is made up of a series of receptors, CB1 and CB2, and cannabinoids, such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), both interact with these receptors in different ways.

Our bodies naturally produce the endocannabinoids anandamide (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglyerol (2-AG). When our bodies aren’t producing enough of these natural endocannabinoids, phyto-cannabinoids from plants, such as THC and CBD, can step in and restore harmony in the ECS.

What Do Studies Tell Us About the Potential Therapeutic Benefits of THC?

One study that did a review of cannabis studies and that was published in the National Library of Medicine concluded that:

  • Cannabinoids such as THC could potentially reduce nausea and vomiting associated with patients undergoing chemotherapy.
  • Adult patients who were dealing with chronic pain issues were likely to experience a clinically significant reduction in their pain symptoms when treated with cannabinoids.

For these conditions, the effects of cannabinoids were modest but clinically significant. While we’re seeing more money being invested in clinical studies of cannabis, we still have some way to go before we fully understand the medicinal benefits of cannabinoids such as THC and CBD.

Spiritual Healing and Cannabis-Infused Drinks

For many people, cannabis use and cannabis-infused drinks are a crucial component of their spiritual journey. Cannabis-infused drinks have emerged as a convenient and easy way for the canna-curious just dipping their toes into the world of cannabis products, thanks largely to their low strengths and easy-to-understand dosages.

A variety of religions utilize cannabis as part of their traditional ceremonies, including Hinduism and Rastafari, along with people dating back to Ancient China. One of the reasons many people use cannabis is its effects on enhancing relaxation and increasing focus. However, no two people are the same, and how one person reacts to cannabis use may be completely different from how you react.

Different strains of cannabis have different effects, and to make it easier on consumers, the three main strains are referred to as Sativa, Indica, and Hybrid. Typically, Sativa strains are more uplifting and energetic, while Indica strains are more relaxing. Hybrid strains are typically a mix of Sativa or Indica, with one strain more dominant than the others.

Cannabis-Infused Drinks and Their Role in Managing Stress

Anxiety is a serious mental health condition, and stress plays a significant role in the development of anxiety. In life, we deal with stress daily. Sometimes, in the right circumstances, stress can be beneficial. It allows us to meet deadlines and focus, and it also triggers our fight-or-flight response when dealing with emergency situations. However, too much stress or dealing with high levels of stress for long periods can lead to anxiety.

While alcohol may have been the go-to solution for relaxing and de-stressing in the past for many adults, a lot of people are now making the switch to natural products such as cannabis-infused drinks to help them relax and reduce the stress in their lives. However, it’s important to note that too much THC can actually increase anxiety or nervousness in some people, so take your time with cannabis products.

The key to having a good experience with cannabis-infused products is to take it ‘low and slow’ until you understand your tolerances and how your body will react.
