THC Vs CBD: What’s the Difference?

Posted by Sweet Justice on 10th Aug 2023

Let’s break down the difference between the two most dominant cannabinoids, THC and CBD!

It’s undeniable that CBD has been one of the most popular new health supplements in the last decade. Thanks to the consecutive legislation changes in the United States surrounding hemp and CBD’s legal status, CBD products are now available nationally. At the same time, over half of the USA has access to THC products.

The cannabis sativa plant family includes both hemp and marijuana. According to the federal government’s classification in the 2018 Farm Act, a cannabis plant with less than 0.3% of THC is considered to be a hemp plant, and over 0.3% of THC is a marijuana plant.

Within the cannabis plant, there are over 100 different cannabinoids, including the two dominant cannabinoids, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).

In the following article we’ll look at:

  • What Is THC?
  • What Is CBD?
  • THC Vs. CBD: What’s the Difference?

What Is THC?

THC is the psychoactive compound found in the cannabis plant. It’s the cannabinoid that’s going to get you high and help you feel more relaxed. However, why does THC get you high while other cannabinoids from the same plant don’t?

Inside our bodies is a complicated cell signaling system known as the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). The ECS is made up of a series of receptors, CB1 and CB2, which are located throughout the body but concentrated in the brain.

Our bodies naturally produce the endocannabinoids Anandamide (AEA), also known as the ‘bliss’ molecule, and 2-arachidonoyl glycerol (2-AG). Endocannabinoids and cannabinoids bind and interact with the CB1 and CB2 receptors in the ECS.

It’s believed that the ECS is responsible for controlling harmony and balance within our body, controlling several bodily functions, including sleep, mood, hormones, appetite, and immune response. When something is out of balance, the ECS corrects it. When you consume a product that contains the cannabinoid THC, it can bind with both the CB1 and CB2 receptors, which is why it has such a wide variety of effects on the body.

What Is CBD?

CBD is the second of the two most dominant cannabinoids, with THC being the other. However, unlike THC, CBD has no psychoactive effects. What does that mean? It means that CBD isn’t going to get you high, regardless of how much you consume.

Unlike THC, CBD has been linked to helping several health conditions, including epilepsy, arthritis, anxiety, and insomnia. CBD is also promoted for overall health and wellness, with many people worldwide incorporating CBD into their daily health and wellness routines.

One of the exciting things about cannabinoids is the variety of delivery methods available, thanks to the location of the receptors in the ECS. These delivery methods include topicals, edibles, drinks, sprays, and much more.

THC Vs. CBD: What’s the Difference?

While there are some similarities between THC and CBD, there are also some notable differences. Scientists and researchers are only now beginning to unlock the full potential of cannabinoids such as CBD and THC.

Below, we’ll compare THC and CBD:

Tetrahydrocannabinol - THC:

  • Psychoactive – Will get you high.
  • Typically sourced from marijuana.
  • It can produce adverse side effects when consumed to excess. Can develop a tolerance over time.

Cannabidiol - CBD

  • Non-psychoactive – Won’t get you high.
  • Typically sourced from hemp.
  • Minimal to no side effects.
  • Typically, doesn’t build up a tolerance.

When trying any THC products, it’s essential to start slowly and ease yourself into it. Consuming too much THC can lead to nausea, sweating, dizziness, and anxiety. It’s not the most pleasant experience to go through.
